World of Warcraft, Eh?

An amusing look at World of Warcraft, with just a delicate hint of Canadian humour. Goes well with a sharp cheddar. Updates Mondays. IF YOU'RE NEW HERE, I WAS HACKED A FEW WEEKS AGO. A NEW SITE UPDATE IS IN PROGRESS. THANK YOU!

A Few Thoughts on Comics…

June 19th, 2010 | by Kelly
Posted In: Blog

Hey all,

This blog post is meant to be more of an ‘info-sharing/rant’ sort of thing. Take from it what you will. I’m not mad about anything, per say, this is just a culmination of experiences and thoughts I’ve had in the last year and a half.

More than once, I’ve had people ask me, in person, email, what have you – about what it takes to be a ‘good’ comic artist. Now, let me start off by saying that I am far from ‘good.’ Am I a professional? I’m hesitant to use the word myself, but I do get paid to do it in once instance (Byron), so…I dunno. I have no formal education in comics, and only really started taking it seriously about 8-10 months ago. In the last few months, I’ve really stepped it up, by doing research, attending lectures, meeting local comic artists – the whole nine yards. I have read probably hundreds of indie and independent comics, looking at style, layout, and technique. Again, I’m not sure how qualified I am to dispense advice (compared to say, Todd MacFarlane or someone), but here goes.

So yeah. My ‘breaking point’ (I can’t think of a better word) came at the local Vancouver Comic Jam last weekend. Comic Jam occurs once a month, and a bunch of artists get together in a little restaurant and, well, draw comics. I sat with some very nice (although timid) artists, and we started talking. After speaking to a few of these girls, there was one prevalent and generalized thought:

“I want to draw comics, and I want my comic to get lots of hits and be popular, but I don’t want to do any marketing. Or work. At all.”

This began to drive me NUTS.  One girl I talked to wanted her comic to get lots of traffic, but didn’t want to do any marketing. She just wanted to “sit there and draw.” The same girl wanted to get better and get feedback, yet she told me that she turned off commenting on her site. Obviously, the biggest problem here is part of the natural human condition: we’re all afraid of failure.

No one in their right mind enjoys being picked on, or needlessly criticized. Yet, these comic artists are so hesitant to leave their protective bubble, that they let their fear get in the way of their success and growth. To me, that is no excuse.

Now, my general style of working in any industry is to WORK. If you don’t like something, you muscle through it. I realize my work ethic is a little more…obsessive than others, but I hold strong and fast to it. If you’re afraid of something, hike up your britches, grit your teeth, and get through it. I had to learn this lesson the hard way, and multiple times. I remember having a frank discussion with my Dad about Byron, and how I wasn’t cut out for the often vicious WoW.com commenters. You know what he told me? He, as a musician for 45+ years, had told me about some song artists that gave up, and others that pushed through. He told me to not pander to those who spread hatred, as frankly – “do they sign your paycheck? No? Then there you go.”

And it’s true. To this day, I am immensely glad I stuck through, and now Byron is so much more enjoyable to work on.

Was that a tough period in my career? You bet your ass it was. I lost sleep, I cried, I thought about quitting every day. But I stuck with it, for the sake of making comics. Making art. My art.

Back to my original point… >_>;

Comic artists need to learn to take criticism. My original professional background was in 2D animation. I remember a time I was called into my directors office, and he told me that I was an idiot, didn’t understand the simplest concepts, and was basically a drooling moron. Did it suck? Sure did. What did I learn? Take your knocks, make an effort to get better, and get back on the horse.

Success is the other half of this equation. Probably…oh, less than half a percent of all online comics ‘make it big.’ Even less than that are overnight hits for ‘no good reason.’ The rest? They work. They market. They’re consistent. They network. And then they work some MORE. So no, new comic artist still in highschool, don’t expect your comic to rake you in tons of cash right away. Hell, it probably will never happen. If you work at your craft, you will get better, and hopefully create comics for the sheer joy of creating them. When I started WoW Eh, I read somewhere that “if you’re getting into webcomics to [primarily] make money, you’re getting into it for the wrong reason.” Personally, I’d say that’s true. Don’t expect your webcomic to replace your full-time job, or whatever you have for your primary source of income.

So, I guess…to summarize:

  • Don’t let your art be ruled by fear of rejection or failure. At the end of day, you have created art, and that’s the best you could’ve done. Failure is NOT the end of the world. Have a good cry, grab a good drink, and get back to drawing.
  • Don’t expect your comic to explode overnight into popularity. Unless your comic is some kind of amazing prodigy or whatever, you will have to network. Link, ask others to link you, do guest comics, use Twitter, Facebook…I worked my ass off to get WoW Eh to where it is. The majority of my traffic still comes from ‘Sunday Morning Funnies’ from WoW.com. Connect with your readers out there. Your audience is worth their weight in gold.
  • Be open to criticism. I happily admit that I have over-reacted to some comments. Read each one, and accept them graciously. There IS a difference between [constructive] criticism and trolling. Constructive criticism will tell you how to improve (ie – your line quality is hard to see, your speech bubbles don’t flow, etc). Trolling is ‘lol ur comic fckin sux ballz’.
  • DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS. I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH. HOPEFULLY PUTTING THIS POINT IN CAPITALS WILL BE ENOUGH.
  • Don’t take after me – learn to balance your work and your life. ;)
  • In order to make comics, read comics! Go out there and see what it has to offer! Read everything – mainstream, indie/independent, manga, foreign (comics from Europe are usually AMAZING things to behold, even if you’re not fluent in French or German. I’m talking about comics like Skydoll and Blacksad.)
  • Study! Reference is your best friend. You should never be ashamed of not knowing how to draw something. Practice, research, and when you’re done, practice some more.

There’s my brain dump on comics. I hope it isn’t too ‘all over the place.’

Now that that’s done – get out there and DRAW!

This Blog Post is High in Fibre and Contains Eight Essential Nutrients

February 1st, 2010 | by Kelly

Coming to you live for guest week #2, we have the tag team of Insanelyzanter and Alex Nunez of Torment of the Week! To clarify, yes, Kissless would totally use Cadi as a stepladder. Friends in high places, eh? ;D Also, I remember telling Alex (when he was asking of content criteria), and I said ‘draw whatever you want, just, y’know, no ‘Two Girls, One Cup’ sort of thing. So what does the guy go and do? Some people. ;3

What a busy week it’s been! As most of you know, I had my long-awaited wrist surgery early Friday afternoon. The whole thing went really well, to be honest. The nurses were really kind (one of them even commented on my Warcraft: Archives book!), and everything was done neatly and efficiently. I took the vote to overcome an irrational phobia of mine and opted to get put under (general anesthetic). Last thing I remembered, I was getting some ‘oxygen,’ next thing I know, I’m waking up in recovery with this cast on my arm. All in all, it was actually not too bad. Now comes the annoying fact that I can’t draw, and I’m a one-handed gimp for two weeks…>_>;;

I just wanted to give a sincere thank you for all the well-wishes, not to mention this amazing set of guest comics! You guys have really outdone yourselves, and I’m sincerely touched by your kindness. So, from this poor, gimped, artist, I give my deepest thanks. o^_^o

Time for Links!

-The Glaivecow – A WoW-related blog written by Ktok, the multi-talented, kind, and ever-patient guild leader of <Portent Alliance> (Horde on Sentinals). Whether you’re a raider, a leader, or anything in between, you’re sure to find some relevant and objective advice. Also, if you like his banner, maybe stop by and order something off of Baenhoof, local cow artist? Eh? Tell ‘er Cadi sent ya.

- Daily Quests – An awesome WoW webcomic by the ever-talented Fyreuni, with weekly lore posts by her companion Vas, the paladin. Fyreuni is a wonderfully good-natured and hard working artist, so I highly recommend you get over there and start reading! Also, I’m just putting this up now because I’m a gigantic tool, and I forget to do things like this. All the time. -_-;;

- Filibuster Cartoons – Non WoW-related, but I’m a big fat nerd, so I like political comics. I find Canadian politics interesting! Same with current events! SO THERE.

Also….

<beware; shameless job-pimping>

Things have been going really well for Fit Brains, the place where I spend most of my days, chillin’ out, maxin’, relaxin’ all coo-ah…*ahem* Anyways, we’ve come a long way as a company, not to mention we’ve made some sweet games (not to mention that all the main art/art direction in our latest game was by meeeeeee), so why not do your brain a favour and swing by? Imagine Brain Age, but, y’know, better. With colour. And substance. And…no giant, polygonal Japanese heads. Did I mention better? ;D’

Fit Brains also makes a great gift for your Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, or anyone that just wants to give their brain a bit of a stretch and a workout every now and then. Also, if you don’t want personalized tracking and metrics, you can just play for freeeee! Free is always good, right?

</end shameless job-pimping>

Thanks again for the great times, everyone! See you tomorrow for Byron!

My Weekend~

‘WE’RE BACK, BABY!’- A World of Warcraft Story

January 3rd, 2010 | by Kelly
Posted In: Blog

If anyone figures out which movie I parodied the title from, you win the internet. And possibly cookies.

Man, Cadistra is a friendly lady, but she does not like this Kama guy. I mean, she arrived on the scene to her best friend in pain, and he’s just standing around, going on about some ’schedule’ that needs to be kept? Looks like she’s gonna give Kama the cold shoulder until she finds out more about this elf…

SO! We’re back! Hooray! I gotta say, even though it’s upping the workload again, it feels great to be drawing WoW Eh again. I really missed this comic! As far as the wrist, it’s actually getting worse…but the holidays are over, I’m bored, and you guys have waiting long enough. I plan to get a comic done for the week that I’m out for surgery (it’s at the end of January), so hopefully I won’t have to take any more time off. That would just be mean on my part. :(

In other news, I hope everyone had a wonderful and restful holiday. Mine wasn’t that restful, but I got to visit a lot of friends and family, and I think I ate about 1.5x my body weight! All in all, it was really wonderful, and I hope for everyone to have a happy, healthy and prosperous 2010.

Now, if you follow me on Twitter, I’ve been eating up an anime series called ‘Ghost Hunt.’ I watched in subtitled (duh), and just finished the 25-episode series earlier today. I have to say that I really enjoyed it, although the ending was a bit too anti-climactic. Also, the series ended off as if it was going to continue, but I seriously doubt it will (unless it did under a different title? Anyone know?)

The series is staring Taniyama Mai, a young girl who, after breaking an expensive camera while exploring an old schoolhouse, gets roped into being the assistant to the ‘Shibuya Psychic Research Center’ after the original assistant, Lin, is hurt.  Its leader is Kazuya Shibuya, a cold, business-like young man, and throughout the series, is joined by an ex-monk (just called ‘Monk’,) a self-styled Shinto Priestess named Ayako, an Australian Catholic priest named John, and Masako, a famous spirit medium.

The characterizations were wonderful, and even though it was a full cast of seven people, I really felt that no one got trampled over, and everyone was given ample screen time (except for Ayako, the priestess, but you find out why at the end). There were times when I was watching that I would genuinely get freaked out, like during poltergeist scenes and what-not. I honestly don’t think there’s an anime that has spooked me as much as this series has. All in all, great characters, interesting plots, and fantastic animation. I give it a must-watch. :)

Also, adding a new webcomic link to the blogroll: ‘No Pink Ponies!’ by Remy ‘Eisu’ Mohktar! I read through the entire archives over the holidays, and I love this comic! A very cute styling of a girl geek who opens a comic book store to get close to the guy she likes. Great story, great [geek] humor, and great art. Enjoy!

Hey! What’s the big ideeeaaa?

Creepy Murloc is Creepy

August 2nd, 2009 | by Kelly
Posted In: Blog

Here we have the awkward and silly introduction of Creepy Murloc! CM was actually thought up long before WoW Eh? was even a glimmer in my eye…you can see his first appearance here, on my shameful, shameful DA account. Creepy Murloc will hopefully (and most likely) pop up in the WoW Eh? universe from time to time. Hooray for social awkwardness…? o_O;

As I said last week, depending on how much work I get done with personal projects, there may or may not be a comic next weekend. I’ll try, I really will…if there is one, it’s gonna be short and sweet. I’m really sorry about that… v_v

Also, be sure to swing by Nourish! Need a way to beat the summer heat? Why not try my Broken Isles Iced Tea? Or Anea’s Honey Spiced Lichen Dip? Want something MANLY to barbeque? Why not try the Honey Mustard Sunscale Salmon, or Pixelated Executioner’s Bom’Bay’s Echo Island Voodoo Chicken Wings? Plenty of noms for everyone!

*Special Announcement to Those Who Have Purchased Prints – if you don’t follow me on Twitter, then you will have seen the unfolding saga of ‘my bank that can’t get its shit together.’ Long story short, prints were supposed to be made and shipped over the weekend, but due to my bank fucking up royally, I had to use the money I had for prints to cover the rest of rent. :P I’ve transferred funds from PayPal, and I’m going to tear Vancity a new asshole, so hopefully prints will go out within the next 5-6 days. Again, I am so sorry for the delay.

And now, for Blogroll!

I am going to make everyone hate me, and make a link category for all of the stupidity-inducing, brain-cell-killing sites I go to for laughs and what-not. Click at your own risk.

Speaking of stupidity, here’s some WoW Bash for you guys…

  • This one’s for Kissless and Chabena (our guild’s rogue)
  • That is…one…bold Tauren. :S

Also, new links added to the rest of the blogroll:

-Cat Rackham – The long and short stories of one Cat Rackham. I don’t know why, but I’ve fallen for this little guy. A very indie webcomic, but…yeah. Check it out if you’re curious.

-Wasted Talent – I’m ashamed that I haven’t had this included yet. A very cute ‘journal’ webcomic by Angela Melick. She’s local, and a super-nice person IRL! :D

~*ANIMATION GEEK-OUT START*~

-TV’s Kyle Blogs in Front of Everybody – This is the personal blog of Kyle Carrozza, all-around amazing artist and animator. He’s already done a pilot for ‘Moobeard, the Cow Pirate,’ and is currently working on a pitch for his comic strip ‘Frog Raccoon Strawberry.’ I love this guys’ stuff, and wonder why he is not sleeping on top of a large pile of money with many beautiful women.

-DUMM Comics – Six days a week, six different artists post a comic for their own comic series. Includes such amazing artists as Katie Rice, Gabe Swarr, and Ricky Garduno. Any cartoon aficidendo should definitely stop by here.

FINISH HIM!!

June 7th, 2009 | by Kelly
Posted In: Blog

This is, by far, the most gory comic I’ve drawn yet. I have very little experience in drawing gore, so I’m sorry. ^_~

In other news, there will not be a comic next weekend, and I’m sorry for that. From June 12-14, I will be attending Anime Evolution over at the Vancouver Convention Center here in BC. I’ll be sharing a table with ‘Angel_P‘, and will be selling those prints, and I’ll do custom, on-the-spot commissions too. Crossing my fingers and hoping everything goes well! …Also, desperately hoping I get the prints done on time… T_T So, with that being said, no comic, for there will be no time. I’m sorry again for a lack of comic after there wasn’t one last week either. v_v

Before I get the link love started, I’d like to send out a big happy birthday to the one, the only…Holy Dueg!! Dueg is a wonderful contributor to the WoW community, and is the most hilarious priest I’ve ever met. Happy Birthday, Dueg, and many more to come! *raises a toast*

Now, link luvs~

-I’m once again going to give an official ‘pimp out’ out to Nourish! The Azerothian Menu, run by Pixelated Execution, Anea, Etherjammer, and Syrana. Nourish is a wonderful idea – a blog full of delicious, quick, and best of all [mostly] healthy recipes for you raiders on the run! I’ve already submitted two recipes – you all should submit one too! :D

-A big thanks to commenter ‘Dawn’ for suggesting this comic to me – The Abominable Charles Christopher. It’s not WoW-related, and I’ve actually seen it floating around, but never got around to reading it. Thank you, Dawn, for shoving this under my nose…I read through the entire archive. Gorgeous art, wonderful characters, and an amazing and intriguing storyline. I highly recommend it.

Link luvs done~

I’ll be sure to post the prints as I complete them…wish me luck, and, if there’s enough demand, maybe I’ll see about putting the prints up for sale from the site…

Sunshine Lollipops~
