World of Warcraft, Eh?

An amusing look at World of Warcraft, with just a delicate hint of Canadian humour. Goes well with a sharp cheddar. Updates once a week~

Kissless' CHA is pretty high, but she never puts extra skill points into Diplomacy and Bluff :V

Roll for Diplomacy

Yikes. This certainly isn’t the happy reunion she secretly may have hoped for. Just what is her problem? Jeez!!

Also…War Crimes spoilers I guess? (I actually did ask the powers-that-be as to just how “public” Wrathion’s involvement is, and they declared it pretty well known. If you haven’t read the book yet, GO DO IT!)

Double update! Double update! \o/

I hate myself too don’t worry

Where to go When You’re Told You Don’t Belong

by Kelly on May 23, 2014 at 10:32 pm
Posted In: Blog

So, I’m going to make a comfortable assumption that everyone knows about this – the innocently ignorant statements of one Rob Pardo of Blizzard Entertainment (credit to Polygon.com). There’s also the full video of it right here (go from 70:10-74-ish). Long and the short of it is that Rob, when asked about valuing gameplay over narrative, and what is Blizzard doing about inclusiveness, responded that “oh, well, we don’t really focus on that. We’re not out to make a social statement; we just want to have fun. Our writers grew up reading comics and idolizing Frank Frazetta so all our female characters are sexy fantasy women.” When asked as to why don’t they hire more female devs to help bring diversity to the table, he responded with the same “we just don’t get as many female applicants.”

It’s a long and sordid problem – young women don’t get into STEM, programming or game design because they’re faced with shitty obstacles just for being girls, which leads many to not bother pursuing, which leads the resume pool for qualified women to be VERY small. I’ve worked in gaming and animation since 2007 – I know the situation.

But that’s not what this is about. This is about a C-level Blizz exec essentially saying that adding diversity to the game is just too much effort, and we don’t want to rock the boat. I understand that their audience contains straight white men, but…women make up nearly half of the entire gaming population, and we’re NOT just all healers. The WoW community is fueled by some of the hardest working, most insanely talented women I’ve ever had the honor of meeting, so…why? Why are women relegated to being the sexy lamp window dressing piece for WoW, or stripped of their power to just cool their heels and let the boys have their adventure? It was another crushing blow to an already shaking community foundation, and Rob’s thoughtless comments made the ground buckle for more than just a few people. Several high-ranking community members threw in the towel to say enough is enough, and I do not blame them one bit.

Where am I going with all this?

Well…nowhere. For now, at least.

WoW Eh has certainly suffered in the past 2 months, but that is entirely due to the fact that I got a new job that takes up a lot of my time and energy. Comics are still a-coming, don’t you worry! But besides that, I was thinking about what the fan community brings to WoW. I consider myself to be a part of a couple of different fandoms, and the biggest thing you’ll see in it is fanfiction and fanart. Any of these fan creations struck me as someone’s way of saying “the source material is good…in theory, but I think it would be interesting if we made this character gay, or a POC.” It’s a way for fans to repair the damage done to a franchise that is, at the end of the day, more concerned with making money than catering to someone’s OTP.

I feel that’s what I try to do with my comics and characters. WoW Eh is, in its purest essence, fanfiction. I try to stay as true to the canonical world as possible, but Cadistra and Kissless (and even poor Kama) are representations of what I’d like to see in WoW. Cadistra is sweet, funny, generous and kind, but has a wicked temper and a feral rage boiling just under the surface. Kissless is tiny, fearless, and an example of a woman who was stripped of a given power only to fight back for every scrap of it. She loves fighting, fucking and is far too impulsive for anyone who would call themselves a paladin. What I’m trying to say is that they’re flawed, but when you think about it, the fact that they’re both women have nothing to do with their actions. They could still do all of those things and be all of those things if they were men, so…why can’t WoW? Why can’t women in WoW have power? Why are they all showing their midriff? Why can’t they laugh, cry, have bad habits, or, y’know, be multi-dimensional characters that go beyond being someone’s wife, lover or girlfriend? Why are there so few female characters in WoW who are not defined just by being on the arm of an already-established male power fantasy?

A great point that was brought up in at least two articles I’ve seen was Hearthstone. There are…two female heroes; Jaina and Valeera. Instead of putting the Dark Lady, the leader of the forsaken and the best archer in not only Azeroth but ALSO Draenor as the hunter hero, we got…Rexxar? Maybe some alternate heroes in the future, at least? Aponi Brightmane for a paladin hero? Magatha Grimtotem for a shaman hero? Christ, Aggra as a shaman hero?!

Anyways, I’m veering off course. WoW Eh means so much to me because I’ve carved out a little corner of the vibrant and war-torn world of Azeroth for two women who can like cute things, cute guys, and still defend their homes, people and factions – without being relegated to 3″ stiletto heels and a steel thong (if you want to dress that way because you find it empowering, by all means! Just do it for YOU, and not to fulfill the male gaze). And even if it doesn’t always translate (I’m not the best artist!) I’ve even changed the girls over the years – I specifically draw Cadi more pear-shaped/bottom-heavy, and Kissless is now thin and lean; no longer the perfect hourglass she used to be. I’m trying to show that heavier women with different body types can be heroic. I’m trying to show that it’s okay to be who you are, and to like what you like, and to feel what you feel!

If Blizzard won’t make WoW a safe place, then you can come hang out with Cadistra, Kissless and Kama, because you’ll always have a shoulder to lean on over here.

Welcome Back Everyone!

by Kelly on October 7, 2013 at 12:00 am
Posted In: Blog

Hey all! Thanks for coming back after I’ve dusted off this site. It feels really great to be back in the saddle, playing WoW and drawing comics. :) I missed everyone!

So. The question on everyone’s mind – “where the hell have you been?”

A fair a valid question, at that. Last year, I suffered from an RSI – a repetitive stress injury – which pretty much forced me to crawl into a hole and wait it out. I won’t go into the myriad of other things I felt and experienced with that, but the long and the short of it was that I fell into a deep depression (alongside being drugged and in pain 24/7).  Trust me – it’s not empowering or a source of pride when you have difficulty tying your own shoes because the nerves in your hands hardly work. :/

Now, what I did regarding the site I cannot excuse. It was 110% my fault, and I owe all of you an explanation. I abandoned WoW Eh because I felt sick and ashamed. I left everyone in the dark and updated on…well, pretty much every venue but the site itself, and I am sorry. It was unprofessional and cowardly of me; there’s no better way to explain it. I was scared, and in pain, I just…didn’t want to deal with anything anymore. Hopefully the new comic will help clear some things up. :)

Onto better news – I’ll be down at BlizzCon in just a few short weeks! I’m super-excited and am really looking forward to seeing everyone! I’ll be hanging out with my guild, but if you see a redhead with teal glasses, don’t hesitate to come over and say hi! I’d love to meet everyone! ♥

Sorry for the wall of text. Also, honestly – if anyone has any questions regarding where I’ve been, how to deal with an RSI, how to start with ergonomics, or just to say hi – feel free to email me at kelly[@]woweh[dot]com. I’m here to help and listen when I can!

Aah! Real Monsters! (not really)

by Kelly on October 1, 2011 at 6:56 pm

(copied from my Twitter…mostly)

AAH! Hello everyone! Please read the copied tweet (Twitlonger FTW) down below! I am not dead (although I’m just getting over a cold…t’is the season!), and I have not stopped loving WoW!

As you all know, I’ve been jobless for about eight months. Joy of joys about six weeks ago – I got a job! Yeah, it’s retail, but hey! Work is work!
…Problem is, is that I actually make less working than I did on EI. I’m working minimum wage, full-time.
I also just moved.
I…also can’t make rent this month. I moved to a cheaper place (by over $150), but my last paycheque went to the security deposit and everything else associated with moving.
I know I have been literally the most useless artist on Earth the last while – moving and all that jazz hasn’t left much (or any) time for my precious WoW Eh. Well, aside from burning through commissions and badges in the upcoming weeks, I am humbly asking for your help.
I know I have NO right to do this. I haven’t created anything in weeks. But if you can toss 50 cents my way so I can not get evicted, I would appreciate it more than you could ever know.
I’m planning on blasting through the Firelands storyline, since it looks like 4.3 is going to drop in November or so.
I’m sorry I’ve been such an awful, lack-luster WoW artist lately, and again, I have zero right in asking for help. But if you can, it would be really, really appreciated.
Now, I just got back from riding my bike home from work, so I need a shower and some dinner. Then…art. Sweet, precious art.

Ok.

After this, no more being shitty.

The next WoW Eh will be up NEXT WEEK. NEXT. GODDAMN. WEEK. I am so mad at myself for making my baby comic suffer like this. I’m frustrated, angry, and just feel like a huge let-down. Basically, here’s what’s going on:

~*WARNING: COMPLAIN-Y SHIT AHEAD*~

Basically…I’ve lost motivation. NOT for the comic. Just…for pretty much everything. It’s a tremendous effort just to get out of bed every morning. There are things I can’t say about…things, but…well, I’m sure you understand. I’m tired of dragging my Cintiq home (and yes, my Cintiq usually stays at work. I pack it in a suitcase and haul it home EVERY WEEKEND). I’m tired that WoW Eh will really never amount to anything else. I can’t publish it (comics aren’t at 300 dpi), and I want to try and make more opportunities out of it. Everything I try and strive for just…fails and falls through.

Right now, I’m in a very bizarre and precarious time in my life where I need change. I need SOMETHING to change. I need to feel like I’m doing something, and going somewhere. I’ve been self-sufficient since I was 16. I’ve put myself through school twice. I’ve lived in squalor and worked three jobs simultaneously before. I don’t have rich parents, or a big (or any) savings, nothing. Don’t get me wrong – I’m proud of what I’ve done. I adore WoW Insider. I love WoW Eh…it’s my pride and joy. WoW Eh will stop when…well, I dunno when it’ll stop. Not anytime soon, that’s for sure. ;)

So, please PLEASE don’t take this as a “ZOMG WoW Eh is ending?!?!?!1111″ It’s NOT. I’m just…tired. I’m so, so tired. I’ve worked 70-80 hour weeks for…God, years. If I’m not doing comics, I’m working 2-3 jobs. I’m volunteering. I currently work a full-time job, a freelance comic job (and a few articles here and there), a hobby comic, AND a gaming podcast. Again, I’m not complaining. I just need something new. I need to grow, and learn, and be challenged. That’s why I was so upset that I can’t afford even that night class. I want to learn. I need to learn. Who knows – maybe I just need stronger anxiety/depression meds? ;p Ha ha…

In any case, the next WoW Eh will be up next Tuesday. I’ve actually gotten sick (AGAIN!! RAWR!!) so I’ve got a chest and throat infection to fight off. On a happier note, Happy Chanukkah everyone! I’m heading down this weekend to go see my family. :) Also, I am so thankful for all of you guys; my readers, my guildies and the entire World of Warcraft. And hey – if I’m miraculously granted some time off, I’ll FINALLY do the art for WoW Eh’s website!! >_<

Much love,

~Kelly

BlizzCon 2010 Recap

by Kelly on November 3, 2010 at 12:20 am
Posted In: Blog

First off, the usual – thanks again for your patience, everyone – it means a lot. These past two weeks have been very hectic for me, to say the least. As some of you know, my apartment was broken into literally the day before I hopped on a plane to Anaheim. In between catching up on WoW Insider work (pre and post-BC), my job, and dealing with the police, getting security installed, etc…yeah. I feel like this is the first chance I’ve gotten to sit down!

So…BlizzCon. I went to BlizzCon for the first time.

I have been to the holy land, and it is good.

WEDNESDAY: My day started early; I was up at 4:15am. Headed to the airport, went through security and customs just fine. Bear in mind, this is the first time I had flown on my own, so  I was a bit worried. I’m happy to report that everything went smoothly; I even got some sleep! I landed at LAX with about an hour and a half until I met with Jezriyah, our top hunter – and my hotel roomie. Meeting her for the first time was awesome – she is the sweetest and cuddliest woman I have ever met! We headed to the hotel and ended up farting around for another couple of hours until the boss-cow himself and his fiance arrived – Ktok and Ailinea. Over Wednesday and the next day, I met a good eleven guildies. I was SO HAPPY!!! It was like a dream; I couldn’t believe that I was meeting people that I’ve been talking to for close to a year and a half, if not more.  The rest of the day was a delightful blur.

THURSDAY:  Thursday was breakfast and lunch with the guild, and the WoW Insider party later that night. Granted, I was a bit disappointed that I missed our first big guild dinner, but duty calls, and the WI party ROCKED. Meeting a good percentage of the WI crew was astounding. They are all such genuinely sweet people! Meeting them makes me wish there was an actual WoW Insider office…  :(

I met…oh, wow…more people than I can count, but a few that stand out are: Oxhorn, Felicia Day (!), the Polygamerous crew – Fimlys, Daewin and Slash2Rustee – and, the man himself…Greg Street, aka Ghostcrawler! GC was SO NICE and SO ENTHUSIASTIC – the man was a little ball of energy! There are a few photos of me and him floating around; I’ll have to track them down…

Much love to you, WoW Insider crew! Until next year! <3

FRIDAY: Day 1 of BlizzCon. DUN DUN DUN.  Big lineups, and…so many people. I just…wow. I love being social, but I’m inherently an introvert, so I was a bit overloaded. The opening ceremonies were hilarious, and there’s SO MUCH TO DO THERE! I bought lots of cool stuff (hooray for JiNX!), met lots of cool people, and oooohhhh man the costume and dance contests were hilarious. Gonna be honest, the woman MC (Kate Hunter, I think) was kind of a tool. I didn’t like her at all. ;p Jay Moore was much better. And yes, I did see the kid wreck  his leg during the dance contest. Don’t worry, he’ll be ok.

SATURDAY: Met tons more people, took lots more photos, saw some artists draw live, went to the art panel, and watched the most exciting WoW 3v3 tourney in existence. I got Samwise and Glenn Rane’s autograph!! XD Also, OMG, the closing ceremonies – TENACIOUS D!! I can say, without a doubt, that I have never rocked out so hard in my life. They were awe-inspiring. :o

SUNDAY: Slept in WAY too late. I was up until…about 3:30am talking to people like Oxhorn, Andy, and cool peeps from Myndflame machinema. We had lunch, then sadly saw Ktok and Aili off to the airport. :( Jez, Loth, Cervus and myself all ate McDonalds for dinner while it was “cold” and “rainy.” Ha ha, amateurs! XD

MONDAY: Staggered out of bed, snuggled with Jezzy to say goodbye, and was subsequently seated next to a four year-old and a squealing baby on the flight home. Came home to my destroyed apartment…and live continued.

I am definitely going to go to every BlizzCon I can. I don’t care what it takes; I’m going! :O

A new WoW Eh will be up this Sunday as per usual. In the meantime, why not check out WoW Insider’s “Safe Passage?” :3
